WHAT IS NET WORTH?<\/h1><\/div>

A lot of people think that net worth is a fancy way of saying how much money someone has, but this isn\u2019t necessarily true. Net worth isn\u2019t just the amount of money that you have or make; it\u2019s actually all of your current assets (cash, real estate, etc.) minus your liabilities (debt, mortgages, expenses, etc.). If your assets outnumber your liabilities, you have a positive net worth and vice versa.<\/p>\n

Assets vs. Liabilities<\/h3>\n

An asset has many characteristics, but ultimately it is a resource that is providing economic value or expected to promote economic value in the future. There are three important properties that every \u201casset\u201d needs to have to be considered a true asset. It needs to\u2026<\/p>\n

  1. Be owned or controlled by the individual claiming it.<\/li>\n
  2. Have some economic value, meaning it can be sold or converted to cash or used to support growth in current and future income.<\/li>\n
  3. Be able to be used to generate future income.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    A liability is something that is owed\u2014it takes a steady cash flow rather than giving one. For example, owing $400,000 on a mortgage<\/a> is a liability. Contrary to popular belief, debt isn\u2019t necessarily bad, but knowing your net worth will put things into a whole new perspective. For example, let\u2019s say someone is halfway through paying down a mortgage of $400,000\u2014meaning they\u2019ve already paid $200,000 on it. That $200,000 that they\u2019ve paid down is an asset and the $200,000 they have left to pay is a liability.<\/p>\n

    When will I need to know my net worth?<\/h3>\n

    Much like credit scores<\/a>, net worth tells you where you stand financially and helps you prepare for retirement<\/a>. Though having a negative net worth isn\u2019t necessarily bad, it does show you that there\u2019s still work to do before you\u2019d feel comfortable retiring. Ideally, you\u2019d have a positive net worth by the time you retire so don\u2019t panic if you have a low net worth.     In simple terms, finding net worth is as easy as subtracting what you owe from what you own. The complicated part comes when you\u2019ve got tons of property, business expenditures, and debts that fluctuate in economic value constantly. For the average person, however, it\u2019s as simple as adding up mortgages, credit card debt, car loans, etc. and then subtracting what you get from the total added value of bank accounts, owned property, and any other assets.
