Employee Spotlight: Alan Johnson

At North Shore Trust and Savings, we believe our strength lies in our team, and today we’re shining the spotlight on a remarkable team member – Alan R. Johnson, our Assistant Vice President of Technology. Since joining us in 2019, Alan has become an integral part of our institution, bringing his self-taught expertise and passion for technology to the forefront of our operations.

A Self-Made Technologist with an Entrepreneurial Spirit

Alan’s journey in the world of technology started in the mid to late ’90s, where he began by taking apart and reassembling the family computer. His unique path, combining a Bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurship from Northern Michigan University with his self-taught tech skills, speaks volumes about his dedication and ability to adapt. Alan’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to open his own computer shop in 2010, demonstrating his commitment to his passion.

Multifaceted Role at NSTS

As the Information Security Officer at NSTS, Alan plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of all our bank technology systems. His responsibilities are diverse, ranging from resolving technical issues for staff to managing the security program for the bank and our loan production offices. Remarkably, Alan’s duties also extend to managing all our facilities – from the practicalities of landscaping to the intricacies of HVAC systems.

A Career Built on Problem-Solving and Empowerment

What Alan loves most about his career is the joy of problem-solving. He thrives on troubleshooting and engineering creative solutions, taking great satisfaction in empowering his colleagues to work efficiently. His ability to explain complex concepts in simple terms is a testament to his expertise and teaching skills.

Community Involvement and Aviation Enthusiast

Outside work, Alan’s commitment to the community is evident. He’s a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Westosha Flying Club and has served as president of the Westosha-Salem Kiwanis. His passion for aviation extends beyond a hobby; in 2019, he started a company called Aviation Soul with his wife, creating unique aviation challenge coins. This venture has not only been a success at air shows but also in the global online market.

Personal Interests: A Pilot and Outdoor Enthusiast

When he’s not ensuring the technological fortitude of NSTS or being an aviation entrepreneur, Alan enjoys flying, having earned his Private Pilot certificate in 2021. He’s also an outdoor enthusiast who loves camping, hiking, and snowmobiling, embracing all the joys of his Wisconsin roots.

A Technological Backbone at NSTS

Alan’s story is one of passion, dedication, and continuous growth. He embodies the spirit of NSTS – innovative, committed, and community-focused. We’re proud to have him as a part of our team, and we’re excited to see where his never-ending quest for knowledge and his love for technology will take us next.
